‘Finally a real Summer’, you hear them chant! ‘We’re going to have two long weeks of pure heat’. Now that’s great news for our Summer deprived country, but it’s not exactly ideal if you suffer from hot flushes. In fact it sounds like the thing of nightmares. We’re here to help you beat the heat and reduce those hot flushes once and for all!
Stay Well Hydrated
You probably know by now that drinking plenty of water is absolutely crucial to reducing hot flushes, as well as the intensity of them. It’s true that hydration can only do a certain amount, but not following this rule will just set you back. So what actually qualifies as plenty of water? At least 2-3 litres of water a day in the heat is going to make the most difference. Drinking this much liquid can seem a bit overwhelming if you’re not accustomed to it. Try to drink a pint with every meal or snack, following this rule should keep you on track.
There have been some studies that suggest certain Yoga poses could reduce hot flushes throughout the day. Yoga incorporates deep breathing with stretching, so positions such as the cat pose can aid in increasing blood flow and helping to focus on your breath. Yoga has a whole host of other benefits, so we highly recommend giving Yoga a go, even for just 10 minutes a day.
It might seem counterintuitive, but working up a sweat in the gym can actually reduce the hot sweats outside the gym! This goes for hot flushes and night sweats alike. So if you can, get your sweat on at least 3 times a week. You don’t actually have to sign up for the gym, so don’t panic if the thought of that fill you with dread! Other alternatives to consider:
- At home workout videos
- Going for a jog
- Exercising with light weights in the garage or garden
- Dance up a sweat at home
